As officials continue to tally up damage, the Northern Tornado has officially confirmed at least one tornado in Fort Erie Monday afternoon.
Officials say there may be multiple tornadoes that occurred in eastern Niagara Region yesterday based on witness video, photos and reports. A survey team will investigate in the area Tuesday throughout the day.
The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), founded at Western University in 2017 with the support of social impact fund ImpactWX, aims to better detect tornado occurrence throughout Canada, improve severe and extreme weather understanding and prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change.
Damage is extensive through the Fort Erie area, including to RONA Fort Erie, as well as locations in Stevensville where residents are reporting downed trees. Canadian Niagara Power crews worked throughout the day restoring power to residents. There have also been posts on social media of temporary horse shelter, as a number of barns were destroyed in the area – leaving livestock without any protection from the elements.
There are multiple reports that Environment Canada did not issue a tornado warning or watch in the moments leading to the incident. We have reached out to them for comment.
