It was not the finish to the Paris Olympics that St. Catharines’ Moh Ahmed was hoping for.
Ahmed, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo games in 2021 in the 5000m distance, finished 16th in the first round of the event earlier this morning, after falling during his race.
His fall was one of five in the heat, as it was a race described as ‘chaotic’ by commentators in the moment. Ahmed had made an appeal, but it was denied by race officials. The other four runners who had fell later in the race were able to advance after the appeal process.
A statement from Athletics Canada says Ahmed’s foot clipped the ankle of the runner in front of him, and that the fall was considered his responsibility – thus leading to his appeal being denied.
Fellow Canadian Thomas Farfard and Ben Flanagan qualified for Saturday’s final.
This is the fourth Olympic games for Ahmed (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), while he also finished fourth in the 10,000m event on Friday.
