Niagara is now under a Freezing Rain Warning from Environment Canada. The agency says a prolonged period of freezing rain is expected, leading to significant ice build-up in some areas. Ice accretion of 10 to 20 millimetres is possible. Northeasterly winds are forecast to gust from 50 to 70 km/h, with the strongest wind gusts expected for exposed areas downwind of Lake Ontario. We could see 2 to 5 cms of snow this afternoon, mixed with ice pellets, and that will change over to freezing rain Wednesday afternoon. Freezing rain will continue into Wednesday night before tapering off early Thursday morning to a risk of patchy freezing drizzle. Gusty northeasterly winds will diminish early Thursday morning.
Environment Canada says extensive power outages and tree damage are likely in the worst hit areas.
