The Fort Erie Meteors are GOJHL Golden Horseshoe Conference Champions.
The Meteors scored four unanswered goals in Game 7 last night against the Caledonia Corvairs to win 5-3, in front of 1500 fans at the Haldimand County Caledonia Centre.
The first period saw the two teams deadlocked at one goal each, after Clark Dunford scored his first of the playoffs for Caledonia, before Kyle Adamo answered for the Meteors about 5 minutes later.
In the second, Caledonia control with a goal from Tyler Clark, while holding the Meteors to just two shots in the middle frame. It was Caledonia who struck next in the third, taking a 3-1 lead on the strength of Connor Doerbecker’s first of the playoffs.
The two goal advantage didn’t last long, as Blake Hall scored 20 seconds later for Fort Erie, while Jaden Flora added about a minute later tied and the game at 3 apiece.
Flora would strike again at 12:18 of the third period to give the Meteors their first lead of the game, before Sam Tonelli added an insurance goal with 26 seconds remaining.
Meteors goaltender Charlie Burns backstopped Fort Erie with 34 saves, while Keegan Jackson made 21 saves in a losing effort.
For the Meteors, it is their first time winning the Golden Horseshoe Conference, and their second championship since their inception in 1957, with the last one coming in the 1978-1979 NDJBHL season.
The Meteors will now join the Listowel Cyclones and St. Mary’s Lincolns in the Sutherland Cup, Ontario’s top Jr. B prize. The schedule for round robin play has yet to be released.
