The Niagara media community is mourning the loss of one of their own today.
Rita Carrey, who had spent time as a morning show host with 91.7 Giant FM in Welland, has passed away.
Carrey’s former co-host Brian Salmon, who is still on the morning show at the station, says she was someone who always wanted to give back.
The announcement of her passing was made on social media by her husband Alex early Friday morning, who she had been with for the last 16 years.
Salmon says he has so many fond memories and stories about Rita, including one day when she let him drive her new car.
Salmon says that story is just one example of how she always wanted to give back to those around her, as she’s someone that loved being with others.
While being the sister of Jim Carrey, Rita was never one to gloat about that relationship. She did however often get props from his work that would be auctioned off for charity.
Salmon says it took a while knowing her until he started hearing stories about her brother, but when he did, they were as funny as you’d expect.
A ceremony will be held for friends and family in St. Catharines next month, while the public is invited to the Christmas on the Terrace event in support of Gillian’s Place on December 7th.
Donations in Rita’s memory can be made to Gillian’s Place at the event or at their location, and can be either cash, non-perishable food items, children’s clothing, toilery items or unwrapped Christmas gifts.
